The Feed: Are most of your workouts short? Mine are.
And forever, the fueling advice has been a thin "you don't need to fuel."
But then why do I feel better and push harder when I take a gel before?
This week David Roche answered that question.
A new study shows fueling before even your shortest workouts (say 45
minutes) has real benefits.
The reason: blood glucose.
Conventional thinking says you have all this glycogen stored in your
muscles - your tank is full, so no need for more fuel.
Wrong.
When you go short, fast, and hard, you want to drive blood glucose.
That's the fuel you tap into right away.
Athletes in the study had longer time to exhaustion and improved recovery.
Personally? I know this works for me.
The big secret: take 20g to 40g (say, 1 gel) right before your workout.
I mean right as you start the hard part.
Not the stretching part.
Not 15 minutes before.
Right as your heart rate starts to climb.
Gel then go.
Try it.
You will feel it.
